Emergency conditions come firstIf you suspect a fuel-gas leak, see smoke/fire or sparking, smell a strong burning-electrical odor, or have an active carbon-monoxide alarm, leave the area as appropriate and follow local emergency/utility instructions before troubleshooting.

SmellFixer is educational information, not an inspection. An odor cannot remotely confirm or rule out gas leakage, carbon monoxide, mold, water contamination, electrical overheating, sewer-gas exposure, appliance failure or structural damage.

Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless. Never rely on your nose to detect it. Maintain working alarms and follow alarm instructions.

Chemicals

Never mix household cleaners unless the product manufacturers explicitly state the combination is safe. In particular, chlorine bleach must not be mixed with ammonia or acids.

DIY limits

Stop when a job requires opening energized electrical equipment, entering a confined space or septic tank, handling contaminated backups without proper controls, working on gas lines, or performing work that local rules reserve for licensed professionals.
